FAQs

What do I wear?

Comfort is important. I recommend something that you can move in easily. Stretchy pants and top that are snug fitting allow me to monitor your posture the best. The room is temperature controlled, yet it is a good idea to plan for a little variation, depending on your personal comfort levels.
What do I bring?

Keeping hydrated is a great idea, so bring a bottle of water or your favorite sports drink. This will be a bit of a workout, so a small towel might be handy.

For Level 2, you will need a pair of zills (finger cymbals) which are available from various sources.
When should I get there for class?

It's best to get to the Studio West Dance Academy ten minutes before class to sign in and get a receipt for your payment. Besides, it's nice to have a moment before class to say hello to your tribal sisters.
What should I expect on my first day of class?

The class begins with gentle streching exercises. Next, DeAnn will share with you several basic tribal dance moves. By the end of the first class you will already be dancing tribal style using the moves you've just learned (it's easy, 'cause you just follow the leader).
How much does it cost?

Check out the classes page for information about prices.
I have taken belly dance classes already, so should I start out in one of the more advanced classes?

Many of the moves that are taught in Level 1 may be familiar to you, but there will be variations and specifications on how each move is executed. It is important to learn the vocabulary of tribal from the beginning as well as the cues that prompt each movement. The value of having belly dance or any dance experience is that you may pick up the vocabulary more quickly. The material covered in Level 1 is repeated each session, and it often takes a few six-week sessions in Level 1 to move up to the next level confidently. Everyone is different and it's not important how long it takes to get it, just that you enjoy the process.
